Lee Walker – The Deep Stuff

Another TIWWD fave label here, as Savoir Faire Musique bring us this solo outing from RiffRaff's Lee Walker.

In its Original form, The Deep Stuff is typically sumptuous SFM deep house tackle, chugging along nicely at 120bpm and sporting a pleasingly understated, though insistent organ line (and at one point, what sounds like a dog barking but might not be). Deep Edition label boss Martijn gives us a remix that's similar but slightly rawer-sounding, Groove Syndicate beef up the kicks and push the tempo a notch, while Miami Ice take us even deeper with a mix that rides groovier percussion and adds lounge-y sounds on top.

All that said, the four mixes aren't hugely varied, to be honest. Good job the Original is as strong as it is, then… cos that also means you won't go far wrong with any of 'em.

Simon Mattson – Drive

More deep house grooves here from Form-and Function.

In its Original mix, Drive is a slow-building groove long on evolving, Arp-like synth sounds, bass throb and a very distinctive "we're gonna driiiiiive, drive all night" chorused M/F vocal. Feft's remix is chunkier and a wee bit prog around the edges, the Stefan K mix brings busier percussion and a slightly techier feel, while the Miami Ice rub is slower edges towards skinny-jeaned indie-dance territory.

The original's the one for me here though – a unique-sounding little gem that's got 'warm-up' written all over it.

Pretty Criminals – Broken Heart Pt 1

With their recent releases having gone down more of a techno route, it's good to see those Essex boys Pretty Criminals back in the deep house saddle with this latest offering.

Broken Heart comes in three mixes (for now… I'm guessing there IS gonna be a Pt 2!). The Original and Miami Ice mixes don't vary huge amounts, though: both are fairly straight-up deep housers in the contemporary style, with looped-up lines of soulful vocal and an insistent organ riff throughout. Okay so, yeah, The Original makes more of the beats, the Miami Ice rub more of the organ, and I'm just SLIGHTLY preferring the latter, if pushed… but to any but the most nerdy deep house spotter they'd be two peas in a pod. Both also have more than a little of that Berlin flavour about 'em, which makes them the obvious choices for dancefloor play in non-specialist clubs.

For TIWWD's purposes, though, it's the Patrick Podage & Nikola Kotevski Remix that's the real find here – a sparse n' dubby heads' delight. Like the song says: shake 'em down…

Miami Ice – The Way You

Another simple two-tracker here from Germany's Markus Greulich, AKA Miami Ice, who's previously appeared on the likes of Lost My Dog and Endemic Digital.

The Original of The Way You is fairly heads-down and moody deep/tech chugger, though looping vocals and a killer organ line bring the musicality and save it from being just another set-filler track. File this one somewhere between east London and the east midlands! Over on the B, meanwhile, Demi (of Be Yourself/SOS/Balance fame) serves up a percussion-led remix that takes the track into prog/tech territory.

It's the original all the way for me, though – when you've got a top-drawer organ line like that, why on Earth would you ditch it? It's insanity, that's what it is.
